This unforgettable odyssey into the distant past carries us back to the awesome mysteries of the exotic, primeval world of The Clan of the Cave Bear, and to Ayla, now grown into a beautiful and courageous young woman. Cruelly cast out by the new leader of the ancient Clan that adopted her as a child, Ayla leaves those she loves behind and travels alone through a stark, open land filled with dangerous animals but few people, searching for the Others, tall and fair like herself. The short summer gives her little time to look, and when she finds a sheltered valley with a herd of hardy steppe horses, she decides to stay and prepare for the long glacial winter ahead. Living with the Clan has taught Ayla many skills but not real hunting. She finally knows she can survive when she traps a horse, which gives her meat and a warm pelt for the winter, but fate has bestowed a greater gift, an orphaned foal with whom she develops a unique kinship. One winter extends to more; she discovers a way to make fire more quickly and a wounded cave lion cub joins her unusual family, but her beloved animals don't fulfill her restless need for human companionship. Then she hears the sound of a man screaming in pain. She saves tall, handsome Jondalar, who brings her a language to speak and an awakening of love and desire, but Ayla is torn between her fear of leaving her valley and her hope of living with her own kind.
i loved this book SO. HAWD.
So, a long time ago, I posted an epic review that got way more comments than I expected on the first book in the series: The Clan of The Cave Bear. THE CAST OF CHARACTERS IN THIS BOOK SHALL RIVAL THOSE OF ALL MY OTHER FAVORITES BOOKS. I. Kid. You. Not.
Long after you close the book and go about your merry way, maybe to go watch the next episode of the walking dead, or maybe you’re privy to taking a walk down the beach, these characters and the heart wrenching problems they face have a way of always staying on your mind! KEIONDA LEI KIDS YOU NOT!!
Ayla, DA SAME chick from before that grew up with Cavemen is back and stronger than ever. Ya’ll, I felt for her so hard. She grew up basically thinking she was this freak of nature, big and ugly, because LET’S BE HONEST, she is a normal homo sapien that looks just like the test of us and she was forced to live with cavemen. Of course there were many descrepencies as to whether or not she was butt ugly or super pretty.
She has to live alone in a valley for 3 FREAKING YEARS YA’LL. Can you imagine what a lonely existence that must have been?? We as the reader feel her every pain, struggle, and share in her every victory. Ya’ll, this chick is so awesome that she makes friends with a horse that she named “Whinnie,” and THEN as if that isn’t awesome, she raises a baby LION and takes care of him into adulthood, and even rides him like like a horse!!
The chick is LOCA, but… AMAZZZEEEEE-BALLLLLLLS.
This book is told in DUAL povs and OH MY BOOKISH STARS, it couldn’t have been more perfect. We meet Jondalar.
MY. MAN. JONDALAR. He’s just a sexy. Like, times 100000000000x
So he and his brother, Thonolan, are on this journey to the end of the earth kind of. They make friends, they make enemies, they almost die, but shhhh, they don’t or else we wouldn’t have this glorious 500 page book.
Then, fast forwaed a little, and a CRAPTASTIAL CRAP LOAD OF CRAP happens which is where he and Ayla meet.
Can someone hand and me a blow horn so I fan express my intense love for these two?? Certain circumstances lead these two to cross paths and believe me, the way they find each other is so unexpected, do SAD AND TWISTED, but I still loved and craved even mintues of it. Even while during the SLEEP CYCLE.
There’s also a part in the end that you are SO NOT GOING TO WANT TO MISS. Talk about some very unexpected FAN YO SELF swoon moments! Gosh…..These books by this authors tend to be very…. long and drawn out but the funny thing about it is that no matter how many times I read it, I never get bored. I ALWAYS want more even ling after I read it. And that, my friends is talent indeed.
Just please promise me you’ll do yourself the favor of reading this. Just….just do it.
I really would like to know how many of you guys have read the Clan of the Cave Bear. I was blown away before by how many of you had actually read it.
