The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures.Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule #1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden.Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden. And that would kind of suck. -- Jennifer L. Armentrout

Let’s see.

I liked this book, don’t get me wrong here, but I didn’t LOVE it. Does that make sense? And I know for a fact that if I didn’t love Armentrout as much as I did I probably wouldn’t have continued with this series but because I LURVE her AND HER WRITING IS DA BOMB DIGGITY FRESH, I stuck with it.

Ain’t I just the dedicated fan?…..Yup.

Basically we have this girl Alexandria “Alex.” In the beginning it’s totally obvious she’s running from something but we, the reader, don’t know what that is until later on the book. Her mom gets killed, (not a spoiler) while she tries to fight for both of their lives. She ends up getting brought back to the Covenant where she used to live before she “mysteriously left.” (The Covenant is a place where Pure Bloods and Half-Bloods live) This chick has mad goals and wants to become a Sentinel so she can be all awesome and be this super-epical warrior girl.

But, she has some problems to face before she can reach her goals.

♥Jealous girls/haters.

♥Mysterious peeps.

AND A WHOLE LOT OF ROMANCE AND SWOON (OMIGOSH, #SWOONFEST) When she meets Aiden again, I PROMISE YOU my irises turned into little heart shapes.

Aiden a pure. (Meaning, well…pureblood, or something like that?) And since she’s a half-blood, that makes them incompatible so they can’t be together. (But PFFT, we ALL KNOW they’re going to get together.)

Let me just highlight some of the (many) reasons I fell for Aiden:

♥AIDEN: Y’all, this dude grew in my heart SO MUCH. At first though, he kind of reminded me of Four so I  kept having these images of Four pop up in my head when I read the scenes he was in. (Although, I’m in no way, shape or form complaining, because PFFT, I’m not.)

♥AIDEN: Even though he’s the strong and silent type, I STILL fell hard for him. (My ideal kind of book boo’s are the mysterious, the tall, the arrogant types but that didn’t matter.)

♥AIDEN: He’s such a fierce protector and I LOVE that even though he has feelings for Alex (and she has feelings for him) he thinks of HER and won’t let their relationship blossom and explode like it will if/when they get together.

Sooooo yes, Alex has to concentrate on this CRAPLOAD OF CRAPTASTICAL CRAP,  all while dealing with her feelings for Aiden which are getting stronger and stronger the more she’s with him.

How ya’ll like my Theo James gif? Your welcome. You are oh, SO welcome.

One thing I didn’t really care for was how much information there was at one time. It’s like, when you first start reading, it’s important to connect with the characters AND the world before we have some of their backstory. I felt there was a bunch of info DUMP that my eyes were glazing over because my brain just wasn’t having it.

                               Over to you:

Has that ever happened to when you were trying to get into a book but the info dump just didn’t let you? Did it make you drop the book or did you keep reading it like a champ? Have ya’ll tried this book out yet?

  1. I’ve had this for years, but after reading reviews that state this is Vampire Academy with different paranormal aspects, I decided not to read it. I’m all for taking inspiration from other stories, but everyone was ranting about the all too close similarities to VA. Glad you like it!

    • Hey CHICA! I personally never gave VA a try out (and maybe I should?) eh… IDK, so I guess it was a good thing that I didn’t have that prior knowledge before I started it? 🙂

    • YAYYY! Another JLA fan! Now I can totally go all fan girl with you ADN I’ll know you ‘love understand and you won’t look at me like I’m totally cray cray! <3

This was the next Armentrout series I was going to read since I recently finished Lux. Good to know your thoughts. Oh boy, I like a big ‘grab me’ scene at the beginning so I guess I’ll have to adjust for info dump. I think you make a good point about the fact that you kept reading because you liked the author’s other books. I am that way. I give more latitude to an author I am familiar with than one I am trying for the first time.

    • EXACTLY! I’m glad you feel the same way as I do S! I KNOW JLA’s writing so I know that she’s going to have a bunch of steamy scenes, hot romance, and some awesome and relate able characters! She doesn’t disappoint with this one girl so I hope you have the chance to start on it soon!<3

    • Oh. Wow. A raging fit you say? What parts? Teehee! I just wanted Alex and Aiden to kiss the first moment he appeared in the scene and I didn’t know him that well. That’s what I had a problem with because it was like JLA was purposely torturing us!

  3. As much as I adore JLA (and I do!) and love her Lux series, Dark Elements series, Wicked, Wait For You, etc… I have yet to start the Covenant series. I swear, I don’t know what I’m waiting on… just too many books and too little time I guess. But I’m sorry to hear this one wasn’t a total hit for you. But at least you loved it enough to continue with the series (I’m assuming?)! And a great big thank you for that Theo James gif. LOL

Sometimes you have authors like that – who simply can do no wrong in your eyes just because you adore their writing and other books so much. I have to say I pretty much have the same with Stephanie Meyer, Michael Grant and Malorie Blackman!
